So Monday's assignment wasn't quite as glitzy as the White House, but it was still fun. The assignment was a ceremony unveiling the new penny that will go into circulation next year. The event even featured a Lincoln impersonator!!
For those of you that are curious there will be four new designs on the back of the penny each representing a different formative period in Lincoln's life. They will be released throughout next year, the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln penny and the 200th anniversary of his birth.
So, I showed up at the Memorial nice and early to get the lay of the land. Nothing too exciting was going on, just a whole lot of suits standing around waiting, so I got to take some nice shots of the memorials. There wasn't a whole lot of press there either, so I got a pretty good location for the ceremony.
The ceremony consisted of a few speeches from people from the U.S. Mint and the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission which were not terribly exciting. Then Lincoln himself got up and gave a nice little speech about what it's like to be on a coin. I think the best part was that they brought in a class of third graders from Georgetown to watch the ceremony and basically be people who were excited about the new pennies. They each got to take a penny home with them, totally not fair cause the press just got media packets...boring!!

My photo was published in two papers, the Austin American Statesman and the Palm Beach Post!
